Airbus Updates No.4575

Airbus recalls around 6,000 A320s

Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) has requested immediate software and/or hardware updates on around 6,000 A320 and A320neo family aircraft after an analysis of a recent JetBlue Airways incident revealed that intense solar radiation may corrupt data critical to the functioning of flight controls. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) subsequently issued an emergency airworthiness directive ordering the airlines to install a serviceable elevator aileron computer (ELAC B L104) before the first flight on November 30, 2025. Aircraft which do not undergo the necessary modification before this deadline will be grounded.

Airlines scramble to fix A320 flight controls issue

The emergency airworthiness directive mandating immediate changes to the elevator aileron computer (ELAC) on around 6,000 A320 and A320neo family aircraft has caused disruptions as airlines scramble to fix the issue by the November 30, 2025, deadline.

The aircraft types have not been grounded. A320 operations continue on aircraft that either have had a serviceable ELAC (re)installed, or did not have the potentially malfunctioning system in the first place. ch-aviation understands that the issue requires a hardware fix on older A320ceo family aircraft, and a software update on newer units.

The software fix - essentially a reverse of a recent update - can take a maximum of few hours and be administered between flights. Tyrone Simes, the chief pilot at Jetstar Airways, told Radio New Zealand that the changes were similar to routine maintenance checks, just on a larger scale and with unplanned urgency.

The urgent EAD issued by the European Union Aviation Safety Administration (EASA) on November 28, 2025, nonetheless forced airlines to take immediate corrective action, causing disruption varying in intensity.

One of the most significant reaction came from avianca airlines, which operates 136 A320ceo and A320neo family aircraft across its AOCs. The airline closed ticket sales until December 8 to account for the "significant operational disruptions [that] will inevitably occur over the next 10 days".

American Airlines, the world's largest operator of Airbus narrowbodies, initially said the issue affected around 340 of its aircraft. However, after further clarifications from the manufacturer, the number was revised down to 209. The airline expects to complete nearly all upgrades on November 29, with some due on November 30. ch-aviation data shows it operates 485 Airbus narrowbodies.

IndiGo Airlines, which has 364 A320ceo and A320neo family aircraft, said around 200 of these were affected, but nearly all upgrades were done by the morning on November 29. "No flights have been cancelled as a result of these checks," the Indian LCC said in a statement.

Wizz Air, which operates 246 potentially affected aircraft across its three AOCs, said that all necessary fixes were made by the morning of November 29.

Turkish Airlines, which operates 177 Airbus narrowbodies, told ch-aviation that only eight of its aircraft were affected and checked on November 29.

Multiple other operators of the A320 and A320neo aircraft reported limited flight cancellations, with most ELAC fixes done overnight on November 28-29, 2025.

Buraq Air to become new Airbus customer with a commitment for 10 A320neo Family

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 19 November 2025 – Buraq Air, first private Libyan airline, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the purchase of 10 A320neo Family aircraft, becoming a new Airbus customer. The agreement was signed at the Dubai Airshow by Fouzi Almiqalh, General Assembly President of Buraq Air and Benoit de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business.

“This agreement represents a significant step forward for Buraq Air as we continue to modernise our fleet and serve more destinations. The A320neo’s efficiency and flexibility will not only be central to strengthening our core network but will also provide a seamless platform for Medsky Airways, our key strategic partner, to jointly enhance passenger offering across both our carriers” said Fouzi Almiqalh.

“We are delighted to welcome Buraq Air as a new Airbus customer of the A320 Family and we thank them for their confidence. This agreement reinforces the A320neo as the aircraft of choice for fleet modernisation and we are dedicated to supporting Buraq’s Air strategic expansion plan” said Benoit de Saint-Exupéry.

The A320 Family is the world’s most popular single aisle aircraft having won more than 19,000 orders globally. The Family includes the largest member, the A321neo offering unparalleled range and performance. The Family offers at least 20% fuel savings and CO₂ reduction compared to previous generation single-aisle aircraft, while maximising passenger comfort with one of the widest single-aisle cabins in the sky.

As with all Airbus aircraft, the A320 Family is able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus is targeting to have its aircraft up to 100% SAF capable by 2030.

At the end of October 2025, the A320neo Family has won over 11,300 orders from 150 customers worldwide.

Silk Way West Airlines orders two additional Airbus A350F freighters

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 19 November 2025 – Silk Way West Airlines based in Baku, Azerbaijan has signed a firm contract for an additional two A350F freighter aircraft. The agreement, which takes the total order to four A350Fs, forms the backbone of Silk Way West Airlines’ fleet modernisation and expansion strategy.

“We are delighted to extend our partnership with Airbus on the A350F programme. This order, bringing our total commitment to four aircraft, marks a major milestone in our company’s growth and reflects our confidence in the future of sustainable air freight. The A350F will strengthen our leading position in the global air freight market as we continue to modernise our fleet and reduce our carbon footprint,” said Wolfgang Meier, President of Silk Way West Airlines.

“This repeat order from Silk Way West Airlines, the largest cargo airline in the Caspian Sea region, is a great vote of confidence at a time when the A350F is physically taking shape in our assembly lines. The A350F will ensure the airline maintains its leading position in the global air freight market and further enables its key role in developing Azerbaijan as a major global cargo hub at the heart of the Silk Road,” said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business.

The A350F features the largest main deck cargo door in the industry, with fuselage length and capacity optimised around the industry’s standard pallets and containers. Over 70% of the airframe is made of advanced materials, resulting in a 46 tonne lighter take-off weight than the competing derivative. The A350F is also the only freighter aircraft that will fully meet ICAO’s enhanced CO₂ emissions standards, coming into effect in 2027. Currently, the assembly of test aircraft in Toulouse is underway.

The A350F can carry a payload of up to 111 tonnes and will fly up to 4,700 nautical miles / 8,700 kilometres. Powered by the latest Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, the aircraft will bring a reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions of up to 40% when compared to previous generation aircraft with a similar payload-range capability. The A350F will be able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at entry-to-service, with the aim for 100% capability by 2030, as with all Airbus aircraft.

At the end of October 2025, the all-new A350F had registered 74 orders from 12 customers.
