Airbus to close Beluga Transport unit

Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) has suspended all flight operations of its subsidiary Airbus Beluga Transport (Toulouse Blagnac) and will wind the unit down, returning the four A300-600ST Belugas to the AOC of Airbus Transport International (ATI), Cargo Facts has reported.

The last flight under the operator's 'BGA' code took place on January 17, 2025, and was operated by F-GSTB (msn 751) from Bordeaux Mérignac to Toulouse Blagnac. The other three Belugas are also in storage:

"We confirm that the decision has been taken to terminate the Airbus Beluga Transport business for outsized cargo missions. All flights operated by the BelugaST fleet are suspended as of now. The closure project has just started and it is too early to predict a completion date. One of our main priorities during this time is to support our employees during the social process," a spokesperson told ch-aviation.

The manufacturer did not communicate the reasons behind the operator's closure but, in a letter to customers, said it was due to "economic factors." Airbus said that the medium- and long-term future of the aircraft had not been decided yet. "To what extent ATI will be operating the BelugaSTs is subject to the respective ongoing planning," the manufacturer said.

Airbus Beluga Transport launched in mid-2022 to commercialise the unique capabilities of A300-600ST, converted nose-loaders formerly used by Airbus to carry large aircraft parts between its assembly sites. The carrier was certified in December 2023.

Airbus Transport International replaced the Belugas with larger A330-700ST BelugaXLs. It operates six units of the type, having taken the final one in mid-2024.

flyadeal to order ten A330neo - reports

Saudi low-cost carrier flyadeal (F3, Jeddah International) will soon place an order for ten A330-900N aircraft, according to Reuters. As previously reported in ch-aviation, the airline had decided to place a widebody order but was undecided about the type. Aside from a single wet-leased A330-200, flyadeal has exclusively relied on Airbus narrowbodies to date.

flyadeal is expected to place the order within weeks, which will also include options for another ten A330s. If placed, the order represents another blow for Boeing, whose B787-9 type was under consideration but reportedly ultimately dropped.

In September 2024, Ibrahim Al Omar, director general of Saudia Group, which operates Saudia (SV, Jeddah International) and flyadeal, discussed expansion plans and said the group hoped to have 300 aircraft at its two carriers by 2032. Aside from the A330-200, wet leased from Jordan Aviation, flyadeal currently operates eleven A320-200s and twenty-five A320-200Ns. According to ch-aviation fleets data, it also has orders for eighteen A320-200N and thirty-nine A321-200N.

Meanwhile, local low-cost competitor flynas (XY, Riyadh) signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus in July 2024 for fifteen A330neo and 75 incremental A320neo family aircraft. The MOU also included options for 15 more A330neo and 55 more A320neo aircraft.

Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 goals include increasing the number of airline passengers moving through the country to 300 million annually, including 100 million inbound tourists, and expanding connectivity to over 250 destinations from Saudi Arabia's 29 commercial airports.

A321N TransaviaRetro 640Transavia to introduce a retrojet

On 21 October 2025, Transavia will celebrate its 60th birthday. To mark this important milestone, the airline is set to introduce a retrojet. This new Airbus A321neo is scheduled to be delivered in the summer of this year.

The featured livery is inspired on the livery that the airline introduced in 1966. It was designed by Thijs Postma, who also introduced the color green and "T" as the airline's logo. Both elements are still part of the livery today.

Transavia (Netherlands) currently operates a fleet of seven A321neos and 40 Boeing B737-800s. Sister Transavia France has a fleet that's made-up of nine A320neos and 68 B737-800s.

A350F Starlux 640STARLUX Airlines doubles Airbus A350F-order

On 9 January 2025, Airbus announced that STARLUX Airlines has decided to excercise its options it held for the A350F, doubling its order. The airline now has a total of ten freighters on order. STARLUX announced its first order for the A350F back in February 2024.

Airbus' first A350F is currently being assembled in Toulouse-Blagnac and is expected to make its first flight this year. Entry into commercial service is expected for 2027.

STARLUX Airlines is currently only operating passenger-flights with an all-Airbus fleet that is made-up of thirteen A321neos, five A330-900s, and eight A350-900s. Next to the ten A350Fs, the airline has open orders with Airbus for three A330-900s, four A350-900s, and eight A350-1000s.

Hello Jets to dry-lease two Airbus A320s

Romanian wet-lease operator Hello Jets (H3, Bucharest Henri Coanda) will add A320-200s on financial leases, BoardingPass.ro, a local aviation news website, has reported. The airline is expecting delivery of two aircraft, PK-AXR (msn 2881) and M-ABTG (msn 2885), by the end of January 2025.

Both aircraft are former Indonesia AirAsia (QZ, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) stock and are owned by Altavair. Both are 18.4 years old. PK-AXR remains in a maintenance facility at Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta, while its sistership is currently undergoing pre-delivery work at Kemble.

Hello Jets currently operates one B737-700 and two B737-800s. The B737-700 and one -800 are presently operating for Israir, while the second -800 is with LOT Polish Airlines.

"The acquisition of the two A320s represents a natural move for Hello Jets as we continue to adapt to the current market conditions at the dry lease level," CEO Tudor Constantinescu told ch-aviation. "We have all the necessary capabilities to expand our AOC with this additional aircraft type."

"These aircraft are dedicated to the wet lease market, aligning with Hello Jets' focused commercial strategy. This approach has consistently positioned us as the top-performing Romanian airline in terms of economics. With these two new units, our fleet will grow to five narrow-body aircraft, making us the second-largest privately-owned airline in Romania by fleet size.”
