1st A321neo for KLM rolls out of paintshop

The introduction of the first Airbus A321neo is coming closer with the first aircraft having received its livery. A321-252NX D-AXXQ (11895) was photographed by Dirk Grothe at Hamburg-Finkenwerder on 24 June 2024. It will become PH-AXA once it is delivered.

Delivery of the aircraft is planned for August, with entry into commercial service in September. KLM will send its new type first to Berlin, Copenhagen, and Stockholm. In October, the A321neo will also be introduced on flights to Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Prague, and Vienna.

The aircraft is also the first aircraft to wear the slightly modified KLM-livery, with the "swoop" now going lower earlier on the fuselage, resulting in a complete blue nose.

Condor's fleet renewal is continuing with the arrival of its first Airbus A321neo. The aircraft, A321-271NX D-ANMZ (11825), was handed-over to lessor Aviation Capital Group and the airline at Hamburg-Finkenwerder on 16 June 2024.

The aircraft is currently being readied for service at Frankfurt and is expected to make its first commercial flight on 5 July 2024. It will, initially, be based at Düsseldorf.

In total, Condor will add 28 new A321neos to its fleet until 2029. Earlier this year, in April 2024, the airline also took delivery of its first of thirteen A320neos.

Croatia Airlines has shared a video on its social media channels that shows the construction and painting of its very first Airbus A220. The aircraft showcased is A220-300 9A-CAE (55290), which is scheduled to be delivered to the airline next month. Close observers will note that the airline will introduce a slight modified livery with larger titles and a different logo on the fuselage.

The airline has a total of fifteen A220s on order, thirteen A220-300s and two A220-100s, which they will use to replace the total current fleet of four A319s, three A320s, and six DHC-8-400s. The A220s on order are a combination of aircraft ordered directly with Airbus, as well as secured via lessors.

This year, the airline expects one more A220-300. After that, the delivery plan is for two A220-100s and four A220-300s in 2025, four A220-300s in 2026, and the final three in 2027.

Airbus Updates No.4302

Cebu Pacific soon to place A320N order

Cebu Pacific Air (5J, Manila Ninoy Aquino International) is closing in on an aircraft order for as many as 150 A320neo-type aircraft, according to Bloomberg. But the all Airbus operator says while an order is in the works, no final commitment has been made.

In October, ch-aviation reported that the Filippino LCC was preparing to issue a request for proposals seeking between 100 and 150 aircraft. In January, via a stock exchange filing, Cebu Pacific confirmed preparations to place an order were underway.

While a longtime Airbus customer, CEO Mike Szucs had previously said that he would be happy to place an order with ALBOE-o if their offer better met the carrier's needs. He also added that he had no interest in splitting the order between different manufacturers.

"The company confirms that discussions and negotiations are ongoing with regards to a fleet order. This potential transaction is still in the closing stages and no final order has been made," Cebu Pacific said in a statement in response to the June 13 Bloomberg report.

That report, citing unnamed sources close to talks, suggested the upcoming Farnborough Air Show was shaping up to be the likely spot to announce the order. The report said it would be awarded to Airbus and be for the A320N-type. If correct, it will be the largest aircraft order by any Philippines-based airline.

According to ch-aviation fleets data, Cebu Pacific operates a fleet of 68 aircraft, including nineteen A320-200s, eighteen A320-200Ns, seven A321-200s, fourteen A321-200NX, two A330-300s, and eight A330-900Ns. The airline also has an outstanding order book comprising eight A320-200Ns, nine A321-200NX, ten A321-200NY(XLR)s, and eight A330-900Ns. Cebu Pacific also operates a subsidiary airline called Cebgo (DG, Manila Ninoy Aquino International), which operates ATR - Avions de Transport Régional turboprops.

Last month, Szucs told an investor's briefing that Cebu Pacific would focus on flights within a four-hour radius of the Philippines, giving it a catchment area comprising two billion people. He said he had no real interest in pursuing a long-haul strategy, and existing flights beyond that four-hour range (to Dubai InternationalMelbourne Tullamarine, and Sydney Kingsford Smith) were network outliers.

Iberia schedules A321neo(XLR) EIS for mid-4Q24

Iberia (IB, Madrid Barajas) has scheduled the entry into service (EIS) of the first A321-200NY(XLR) for November 14, 2024, connecting Madrid Barajas to Boston, ch-aviation research has revealed.

Then, on January 15, 2025, Iberia will deploy the new extra-long-range narrowbody jet into scheduled service to Washington Dulles. The A321neo(XLR) will have a two-class configuration with 14 seats in business and 168 in economy.

Earlier this year, the IAG International Airlines Group dropped Aer Lingus (EI, Dublin International) as the global launch operator of the XLR, after a pilot pay dispute was not resolved in time, exchanging it instead for Iberia in this role. Due to this reason, there are currently two A321neo(XLR)s, msn 11348 and 11504, that could be the first delivered to Iberia.

Msn 11348 was supposed to be the first taken by Aer Lingus, and would have become EI-XLR upon delivery. However, it was recently spotted with the Irish company’s livery on its tail but Iberia’s logo on the engine. Meanwhile, msn 11504 has both its tail and engine with Iberia’s livery.

ch-aviation has asked the IAG for comment on which aircraft will be the first to be delivered to Iberia.

In 2019, IAG ordered fourteen A321neo(XLR)s, six of which were initially destined for Aer Lingus and eight for Iberia. The aircraft type still needs to be certified, with Airbus saying in May that the ongoing certification and flight-test campaign is in its final stages.

Airbus completes BelugaXL deliveries

Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) has delivered the sixth and final A330-700ST BelugaXL freighter to its in-house operator Airbus Transport International (4Y, Toulouse Blagnac) which has thus completed its rollover from previous-generation A300-600STs.

F-WBXL (msn 1824) was built as the first of the six BelugaXLs. It operated the type's maiden flight in July 2018, but instead of entering revenue service upon certification, it continued to serve as a testbed for the programme. It was then brought back into maintenance in 2023 to undergo cabin refitting and refurbishment and will now begin operations on behalf of Airbus Transport International.

Airbus's in-house airline is primarily tasked with ferrying large aircraft parts, such as fuselage sections and wings, between its various production sites. Thanks to its larger capacity, the BelugaXL can better support the production ramp-up.

The last of five A300-600ST Belugas, F-GSTD (msn 776), ended operations on behalf of Air Transport International in mid-May 2024. However, the manufacturer has no plans to retire the previous-generation oversized cargo freighters. Three have already been moved to a newly set up commercial operatorAirbus Beluga Transport (BCO, Toulouse Blagnac), which proffers the Belugas to third parties. Airbus believes that given the scarcity of freighters capable of carrying oversized loads due to the reduced availability of An-124s and the destruction of the world's only An-225 during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Beluga will remain attractive in this niche albeit lucrative market.
