LOT Polish Airlines to wet-lease an A340 in 1Q19

LOT Polish Airlines (LO, Warsaw Chopin) will wet-lease a single A340-300 from Air Belgium (KF, Brussels Charleroi) from February 28 through March 11, 2019, Belgian aviation website The Aviation Eye has reported.

OO-ABA (msn 835) will be deployed on LOT's 6x weekly Warsaw Chopin-New York JFK service and will cover for one of the Polish carrier's grounded B787-8s. The contract will also mark the first time Air Belgium has operated to the United States.

Currently, three out of LOT's eight B787-8s are grounded due to issues with their Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 powerplants.

For its part, Air Belgium operates four A340-300s of which one is under a long-term wet-lease to British Airways (BA, London Heathrow) on the London Heathrow-Dubai Int'l route. The other three are used to operate ad-hoc charters and wet-leases.

Air Canada to use A220s mostly on existing routes

Air Canada (AC, Montréal Trudeau) is planning to deploy its incoming A220-300s predominantly as a replacement on existing routes but there will be "some new flying" as well, Senior VP (Regional Markets and Government Relations) Ferio Pugliese said at the Routes America conference.

The Canadian carrier is due to receive the first of its forty-five ordered Airbus regional jets in late 2019, although commercial service will likely only begin in early 2020. Initially, the A220s will replace E190s, of which Air Canada operates nineteen.

So far, Air Canada did not reveal any routes for the new type, although an investor presentation in 2018 showed that the airline is at least considering deploying the A220s to some of the major US cities and to Mexico.

According to the ch-aviation schedules module, Air Canada's Embraer regional jets are currently based out of Toronto Pearson, Ottawa Int'l, and Montréal Trudeau and operate on domestic, US, and Caribbean (Moss Town and Grand Cayman Island) routes.

Air Vanuatu set to order four A220s - report

Air Vanuatu (NF, Port Vila) is set to put down a VUV850 million vatu (USD7.46 million) deposit on four Airbus narrowbodies. According to The Daily Post, Minister of Finance and Economic Management, Gaetan Pikioune, and Air Vanuatu Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Derek Nice, signed the instrument on February 15.

The aircraft are 133-seaters - presumably A220-300s - the first of which is to deliver by June 2020.

According to Nice, the jets will be based out of Vanuatu and used to serve destinations in Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific region.

Last month, the South Pacific island's prime minister, Charlot Salwai, unveiled the "Shared Vision 2030" initiative among whose aims is to grow Air Vanuatu's fleet from the current seven aircraft - one B737-800, one ATR72-600, one ATR72-500, three DHC-6-300s, and one BN-2 - to thirteen by 2030.

Air Vanuatu is also looking to build greater synergies with other regional South Pacific-based carriers.

Last week, the CEO of Air Calédonie (TY, Nouméa Magenta), Samuel Hnepeune, and the President of Air Vanuatu, Joël Lengsau, signed a framework agreement covering maintenance (currently done in New Zealand), the provision of backup capacity when aircraft are AOG or due in for maintenance, and business strategy.

An Air Caledonie statement said that among the tie-up's more specific objectives are service to Tanna in Vanuatu.

A meeting is scheduled for early March in Vanuatu to iron out the details.

Air Belgium to resume scheduled Airbus A340 ops in late 1Q19

Air Belgium (KF, Brussels Charleroi) is planning to resume scheduled operations on March 31, 2019, with a 3x weekly service between Brussels Charleroi and Hong Kong Int'l.

The carrier has already launched ticket sales via its website. Flights will be operated with A340-300 equipment.

Air Belgium suspended its flights to Hong Kong on October 1, 2018, citing the non-fulfilment of obligations regarding pricing and traffic volume by its Chinese tour operator partner Utour. Subsequently, the airline touted flying to mainland China, specifically eyeing Zhengzhou. Although it inked a Letter of Intent with the government of the Henan province, so far the flights have not been launched.

During the Winter 2018/9 season, Air Belgium focusses on ACMI and charter services with its fleet of four A340-300s. One quadjet is currently wet-leased to British Airways (BA, London Heathrow) for London Heathrow-Dubai Int'l services, while the other three are parked.
