Airbus Updates No.3026

Airbus Delivered 21 Aircraft But Took No Orders In January

In its typical monthly fashion, Airbus has revealed its monthly order and delivery statistics for January. While the manufacturer had a reasonably successful December delivering 89 new aircraft, this didn’t carry across for reasons that we’ll discuss further down.

While many hope that aviation fares better in 2021 than last year, it seems that this won’t be the case. At least for the time being. Europe is currently in the grips of its second wave of COVID-19, bringing traffic close to the levels experienced during the worst days in April 2020. However, with the prospects of vaccines, things are looking up for the future.

21 aircraft delivered

In January, Airbus delivered just 21 aircraft. It may look low compared to the 89 aircraft delivered in December, but there’s a very good reason for this. The big aircraft manufacturers usually push to deliver as many aircraft as possible at the end of the year. But why?

By delivering aircraft before the clock strikes midnight on the first of January, the manufacturer can count them in the previous year’s figures. This saw JetBlue taking delivery of its first Airbus A220 on December 31st. Given the massive push to deliver aircraft before the year’s end, it is understandable.

So who took the 21 Airbus deliveries?

Fifteen customers took delivery of aircraft in January. They were (ordered by first delivery during January),

  • Delta Air Lines (6) – 1x Airbus A220-100, 1x Airbus A220-300, 4x Airbus A321ceo
  • SAS (2) – 2x Airbus A320neo
  • Air China (4) – 4x Airbus A320neo
  • Shenzen Airlines (1) – 1x Airbus A320neo
  • Private Customer (1) – 1x A319neo
  • Uganda Airlines (1) – 1x Airbus A330-800
  • American Airlines (1) – 1x A321neo
  • flynas (1) – 1x Airbus A320neo
  • Turkish Airlines (1) – 1x Airbus A350-900
  • Air Canada (1) – 1x Airbus A220-300
  • China Eastern Airlines (1) – 1x Airbus A320neo
  • Vietnam Airlines (1) – 1x Airbus A320neo

The vast majority of deliveries took place in the last ten days of January. According to data from Planespotters.net, it seems that the A319neo delivered to the private customer is an Airbus Corporate Jet. The aircraft, registered VP-CRR, flew from Hamburg to Basel for its cabin outfit. The aircraft was delivered to AMAC Aerospace.

No new orders

Unfortunately, Airbus received no new aircraft orders during January. Given the post-Christmas lull, tied with the impact of the latest COVID-19 variants, this doesn’t come as a huge surprise. Indeed, we saw a similar state of affairs at the crisis’ height in April 2020. However, it wasn’t all bad news. While there were no new orders, there were also no cancelations.

UPS Airlines takes redelivery of first upgraded A300(F)

UPS Airlines (5X, Louisville Int'l) has taken redelivery of the first of fifty-two A300-600Fs featuring upgraded avionics, extending the freighters' service lives by at least 20 years.

N173UP (msn 868) was withdrawn from the logistics firm's revenue service in February 2019 and subsequently ferried to Toulouse Blagnac for the modifications. Airbus together with Honeywell Aerospace installed a flight management computer (FMC), cockpit displays, weather radar, and other updates in the world's first such upgrade of the A300.

The old FMC had such limited memory that it could not store navigational data for the entire United States, forcing the carrier to manually upload new data between flights in a process that extended the turnaround time by 45 minutes, Director of Engineering Ed Walton told Bloomberg. The upgrade will, therefore, significantly improve the carrier's productivity.

The aircraft was ferried back via Bangor to Mobile Downtown over the course of January 19-21, 2021, Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows. UPS Airlines said it took formal redelivery of the twinjet on February 3.

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, UPS Airlines currently owns and operates fifty-two A300-600Fs. None of the remaining 51 has entered the upgrade process yet. While UPS Airlines declined to outline the timeline for the upgrade of the entire subfleet, works on other aircraft are expected to take much less than it did for N173UP. Upgrades are also expected to be performed at various MRO bases and not just in Toulouse.

UPS Airlines' A300-600Fs are 18.2 years old on average. The carrier's fleet includes some of the last units of the type ever produced, although not the absolute final ones - the last six A300s were delivered to FedEx Express (FX, Memphis Int'l).

A total of fifty-three A300-600Fs were delivered to UPS Airlines directly from Airbus between 2000 and 2006. N155UP (msn 841) crashed near Birmingham, AL airport in August 2013 and was damaged beyond repair.

UPS Airlines is currently the world's largest A300-600F operator. FedEx Express operates 42 such aircraft, although it also operates 43 converted A300-600(F) and A300-600R(F)s - which UPS does not have.

Air Belgium to operate two A330 freighters for CMA CGM

Air Belgium (KF, Brussels Charleroi) will operate two of its four incoming A330-200(F)s under a CMI agreement with French shipping giant CMA CGM, which has reportedly set up a subsidiary to own the dedicated freighters, The Loadstar has reported citing internal sources.

The Belgian carrier recently announced that initially, it would add four of the freighters, growing to six, as it seeks to diversify away from its reliance on A340-300-operated passenger services. While the carrier did not formally confirm the type, it has been reported that it would add four ex-Qatar Airways (QR, Doha Hamad Int'l) A330-200(F)s.

Sources told The Loadstar that at least two of the aircraft - thus far owned by Qatar Airways - will be acquired by CMA CGM through its new unit CMA CGM Air Cargo. They will subsequently be dry-leased to Air Belgium, which will operate them on behalf of the shipping firm.

CMA CGM remains in talks with Groupe Dubreuil, the owner of Air CaraibesAir Caraibes Atlantique, and French Bee, regarding the potential acquisition of a 30% stake. In a September 2020 Memorandum of Understanding, CMA CGM underlined its plan to use the bellyhold cargo capacity onboard A350s operated by Groupe Dubreuil's airlines. However, as the talks dragged on inconclusively towards the end of the year, CMA CGM was said to have been leaning towards setting up its own cargo carrier instead. The privately-held shipping giant did not comment on the reports. Talks with Groupe Dubreuil are formally ongoing and are expected to conclude either way in February 2021.

Airbus Updates No.3021

Qatar Airways Has Retired All Of Its Airbus A330 Freighters

As of yesterday, Qatar Airways’ cargo division is no longer operating the Airbus A330 freighter. Its remaining four A330-200Fs were taken out of service in light of the recent triple-Boeing 777F delivery, which took place at the start of the month.

One of the airlines’ A330 freighters had already been sold to Wizz Air, which is operating it on behalf of the Hungarian government. Photo: Airbus

The outgoing Airbus freighters

STAT Trade Times, who interviewed Qatar Airways Chief Officer Cargo, Guillaume Halleux,  confirmed the departure of the freighters. As part of the interview, Halleux said the following:

“We had five A330 freighters. We sold one of them in August last year. And the remaining were planned to exit. Therefore, as on January 31, they will be out of our fleet.”

The final four Airbus freighters were A330-200s registered as A7-AFG, AFH, AFI, and AFJ. These freighters are relatively young as they range between just five and six years of age.

The delayed phase-out

Qatar Airways had actually planned to remove its A330 freighters earlier than January 2021. In fact, November 2020 was the original phase-out time. However, this had been pushed back due to delays in Boeing’s delivery of new 777 freighters.

The airline has been phasing out these jets, with three leaving in 2019, leaving the company with five in 2020. The first of these five was to be removed in April 2020. However, with the onset of the global health crisis, this was moved back to July-August.

Interestingly, the sale of the one A330 last summer was to Hungarian budget airline Wizz Air. According to The Load Star, the Hungarian government had apparently been facing criticism for being unable to procure air freight capacity during the PPE peak. Its response was to purchase an A330-200F from Qatar Airways. Wizz Air is the official operator of the jet, but the aircraft’s main work is on behalf of the Hungarian government.

Brussels Airlines Says Goodbye To Its Last Airbus A330-200

Belgium’s national flag carrier and the country’s largest airline, Brussels Airlines, is sending its last remaining Airbus A330-200 to the Netherlands, where it will be dismantled and sold off for spare parts. At lunchtime today, the aircraft, registration OO-SFZ, will depart Brussels Airport (BRU) for Enschede Airport Twente (ENS).

Brussels Airlines Airbus A330-200
Brussels Airlines had three Airbus A330-200s

According to Aviation24.be, once on the ground in Holland, the aircraft will be handed over to specialist aircraft dismantling company AELS (Aircraft End-of-Life Solutions), who will carefully take the plane apart. Once in pieces, the parts are labeled, recertified, and returned to the market as spare parts. AELS is the only company that can handle the entire supply chain for aircraft disassembly and dismantling.

Brussels Airlines has 12 Airbus A330-300s

According to Planespotters.net Brussels Airlines had three Airbus A330-200s in its fleet with OO-SFZ the last remaining -200 version following OO-SFY being sent to Enschede Airport Twente in August 2019.

Before today, OO-SFZ was still active in the Brussels Airlines fleet. However, it had remained parked for several months following the coronavirus outbreak in Europe last spring. Brussels Airlines’ remaining long-haul fleet is now exclusively composed of 12 Airbus A330-300s with an average age of 13.8 years.

About the Airbus A330-200

Derived from the Airbus A300, the Airbus A330-200 is a short version of the Airbus A330-300. The A330-200 is a twin-aisle widebody jet with a range of 7,250 nautical miles ( 13,450 kilometers). Brussels Airlines’ Airbus A330-200s had 272 seats laid out in a three-class configuration.

Business class has 22 flatbed seats, while premium economy offers 32 seats that are slightly wider than the 218 seats in economy class. Brussels Airlines used its A330-200 on routes between Belgium and the United States and between Belgium and long-haul routes in Africa.
