A225 Airbus 640Airbus closer to A220-500 launch

Airbus seems to becoming closer to an official launch of the A220-500, the long awaited stretched version of the A220. According to Reuters, the manufacturer will launch official sales talks with prospects in the coming weeks.

If the project receives a positive welcome from potential customers, the next step would be a formal approval by the Airbus-board. If things go well, it's expected that the A220-500 could be officially launched by July of this year.

The proposed A220-500 would be a "simple" stretch, with no changes to the aircraft's engines or wings. It will increase the seating capacity to a maximum of around 180 passengers, which is 20 more than the A220-300 can carry. Because of the increased weigth, the A220-500 will have less range than the A220-300. Various experts expect the aircraft to be able to fly up to four hours with its maximum load.

A lengthened A220 has always been considered by Airbus and was also plotted by Bombardier, which dubbed it the CS500. The European manufacturer over the years had been reluctant in launching the version as profitable production of the current versions proved challenging. A stretched A220 would also encroach on the territory of the A320neo. However, with production of the A220 becoming more stable and more customers choosing the A321neo over the A320neo, it seems Airbus is now confident enough to pull the trigger.

A220-customers like Air France, Breeze and Delta Air Lines have always publically stated their interest in a stretched version and it's interesting to see who will become the launch customer(s) if the project is officially launched.

Lufthansa to retrofit all A380s by mid-2027

Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt International) has announced that all eight of its A380-800s will undergo cabin refurbishments and have new business class seats installed. The retrofits will conclude by mid-2027.

The first of the eight aircraft, D-AIMC (msn 44), will begin the retrofit at Elbe Flugzeugwerke facility in Dresden in February 2026 and is expected to return to service in April.

The airline will reduce the number of business class seats from the current 78 to 68. The A380s will also retain eight first-class suites, 52 premium economy seats, and 371 economy class seats for a total of 499 seats, compared to 509 currently.

Lufthansa underlined that it will "rely on an existing certification for this cabin upgrade, eliminating the need for a lengthy approval process". This choice avoids the snags that have plagued the carrier's new Allegris interior, comprising newly developed seats which have been delayed due to certification snags. The airline continues to operate its Allegris-outfitted B787-9s with most of business class blocked due to the lack of certification for the seats.

The German carrier's A380s are 13.8 years old on average and are all based out of Munich.

Discover Airlines to retrofit A330 cabins by mid-2028

Discover Airlines (4Y, Frankfurt International) will retrofit the cabins of its long-haul A330-300s by mid-2028, unveiling an "ocean blue" interior, costing a "three-digit million euro sum", in what it calls the biggest investment in its five-year history. All sixteen A330s will begin receiving the new cabins from April 2027. After the refit, each aircraft will feature 288 seats: 227 in economy, 31 in premium economy, and 30 in business. There will be two front-row business class suites, a redesigned "hard-shell" premium economy seat, upgraded economy seating, touchscreens with Bluetooth, and free high-speed Starlink internet in all classes.

AirAsia inches toward 100-unit A220 order

AirAsia (AK, Kuala Lumpur International) is reportedly finalising a deal to purchase approximately 100 A220s jets, which would become the low-cost carrier's first regional jets ever. The agreement would include options for an additional 50 aircraft. Neither Airbus nor AirAsia has formally confirmed the terms, but the group has been open about the ongoing negotiations with regional jet manufacturers since mid-2025.
