IndiGo places firm order for 30 additional A350-900 Airbus aircraft

New Delhi, India, October 17, 2025 - IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has finalised a commitment for 30 Airbus A350 aircraft, converting a Memorandum of Understanding signed in June into a firm order. This brings the airline's total A350 orders to 60 aircraft. The expanded order marks a strategic shift for IndiGo as it prepares to enter the long-haul international market, leveraging the A350’s long range and efficiency to support its global ambitions.

“Today is a special day for IndiGo as we solidify our commitment to expanding our international footprint and offering unparalleled connectivity to our customers,” said Pieter Elbers, CEO, IndiGo. “The conversion of this MoU into a firm order for 30 additional A350-900s is a testament to our confidence in the future of Indian aviation and our strategic partnership with Airbus, further reinforced by the strong start of our long-haul operations. In line with India’s vision of becoming a global aviation hub and our aspiration to establish ourselves as a leading global aviation player by 2030, IndiGo is taking decisive steps forward. These aircraft, as they join our fleet in the years to come, will play a pivotal role in enabling IndiGo expand its reach, connect India with more destinations across the globe, and offer our customers new international travel opportunities.”

“The A350’s unparalleled fuel efficiency, range and passenger comfort perfectly align with IndiGo’s ambitious growth plans and international long-haul network ambitions. This milestone reinforces our strong partnership with one of the fastest-growing airlines in the world, and we look forward to supporting their expansion into new long-haul markets,” said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, EVP Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business at Airbus.

India, the world’s fastest growing aviation market, is witnessing a surge in international travel as the economy grows and household incomes rise. The A350 is perfectly positioned to serve the country’s aspirations for long-range travel.

Bound in a strategic relationship of growth with India for more than half a century, Airbus products and services have catalysed the growth of the country’s civil aviation sector. While the A320 Family aircraft are supporting the democratisation of air travel in India, the A350 has become the reference aircraft to unlock the potential of the international market for the Indian carriers.

The A350 is the world’s most modern and efficient widebody aircraft in the 300-410 seater category. The A350’s includes state-of-the-art technologies and aerodynamics delivering unmatched standards of efficiency and comfort. Its new generation engines and use of lightweight materials bring a 25 per cent advantage in fuel burn, operating costs and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, compared to previous generation competitor aircraft.

As with all Airbus aircraft, the A350 is already capable of operating with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus aims for all its aircraft to be 100% SAF-capable by 2030.

At the end of September 2025, the A350 had won more than 1,400 orders from 63 customers worldwide.

Discover Airlines to operate the Airbus A350

Earlier this month, Scramble published an article on the future set-up of the Lufthansa Group longhaul-fleet. In it we reported that the Group was still debating if Discover Airlines would operate the Airbus A350, and now they have pulled the trigger and decided that it will.

In total, four A350-900s will join the fleet, while it will say goodbye to its three A330-200s.

According to aero.de, the four A350s that will be transferred to Discover Airlines are:

  • D-AIVA (228), to be delivered in 2027
  • D-AIVB (236), to be delivered in 2027
  • D-AIVC (243), to be delivered in 2028
  • D-AIVD (280), to be delivered in 2028

All four of these Airbuses were acquired by Lufthansa in 2021 from Philippine Airlines and have a very different cabin lay-out compared to the A350s that they have ordered themselves.

Discover Airlines is planning to grow the fleet from 30 today to around 40 by 2028. In the coming years it will also expand with additional Airbus A320s, as well as additional A330-300s.

The fleet of today is made-up of sixteen A320s, three A330-200s, and eleven A330-300s.

Abra Group orders 50 A320neo, to lease 5+2 A330neo

Abra Group has secured an additional order for fifty A320neo aircraft with Airbus and has entered into an operating lease agreement with Avolon to dry-lease five A330-900Ns scheduled to be delivered in 2026. In addition, it signed a Letter of Intent with the lessor for up to two more aircraft of the same type.

With the addition of the 50 extra A320neo, Abra’s order book grows to 150, with unfilled deliveries standing at 138, Airbus said in a statement. It was not disclosed when the deliveries of these aircraft will begin.

Abra Group said that the new widebodies “may be operated by any company” within the group, with the ownership and financial costs to be borne by the respective operator. The holding company owns avianca airlinesGOL Linhas Aéreas InteligentesWamos Air, and ACMI start-up NG Servicios Aéreos. None of these currently operates the A330-900N.

The fleet allocation will be determined by Abra based on operational and financial needs, as well as any business opportunities and the operational and financial situation of each company, the group divulged in a market filing. The agreement is “part of Abra’s broader strategic plan to expand operations in the region and internationally, and complements other recent fleet decisions by the group.”

ch-aviation data shows avianca’s fleet comprises eight A319-100s, seventy-nine A320-200s, forty-seven A320-200Ns, three wet-leased A330-300s (sourced from Wamos), and sixteen B787-8s. Wamos’ fleet comprises five A330-200s, and eight A330-300s. GOL Linhas Aéreas operates twelve B737-700s, fifty-eight B737-8s, sixty-two B737-800s, and nine B737-800(BCF)s.

The South American holding company recently announced plans to file paperwork for a potential initial public offering (IPO) in the US and revealed its aim to establish a new ACMI/charter carrier in Chile (NG Servicios Aéreos), while GOL announced plans to go private, undertake an internal merger process, and delist from the B3 Brazil Stock Exchange.

Sunrise Airways wet-leases two A320-200's

Sunrise Airways (S6, Port au Prince) will wet-lease two A320-200s, each configured with 179 seats, from GlobalX to accelerate its expanding operations in the Caribbean under its three separate air operator’s certificates in Haiti, the Dominican Republic (Sunrise Dominicana), and the eastern Caribbean (Sunrise Airways Dominica).

The addition of the two A320s will allow the company to initially “bolster our existing routes, particularly between Florida [Miami International] and Cap Haitien,” said Gary Stone, Sunrise’s chief executive officer.

“In the near future, though, they’ll be instrumental in our efforts to expand our network to new destinations like Fort Lauderdale InternationalNew York Newark, and other key markets throughout the Americas. We’re planning additional fleet expansion over the coming months, and by the close of 2025 we anticipate operating 18 aircraft across our expanding network,” Stone added.

Sunrise Airways recently requested authorisation from the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to start serving New York Newark with wet-leased capacity.

In the meantime, the two A320-200s will increase Sunrise’s fleet (across all AOCs) to 14 aircraft.

ch-aviation data shows Sunrise Airways’ fleet comprises one in-house BAe Jetstream 32, one in-house E120, three wet-leased E120s, and one wet-leased E145. The wet-leased capacity comes from Sahara African Aviation. Sunrise Dominicana operates two BAe Jetstream 32s and one E120, and Sunrise Dominica conducts its flights with one E120.

Spirit Airlines to reject 87 aircraft leases

Spirit Aviation Holdings, parent entity of Spirit Airlines, has petitioned the US Bankruptcy Court for an authorisation to reject 87 aircraft leases, including nineteen A320-200s, sixty-five A320-200Ns, and three A321-200NXs. The batch amounts to more than a third of the LCC's current fleet.

These lease rejections are on top of the recent agreement Spirit secured with its biggest lessor, AerCap, which included authorisation to reject the lease agreements of 27 aircraft (nineteen A320-200Ns and eight A321-200NXs). In total, the carrier is proposing to trim its fleet by more than a half from the current 214 aircraft to 100.

All 87 aircraft listed for rejection in the new filing are to be surrendered on October 27, 2025 at Goodyear. The impacted lessors are:

Many of the aircraft to be rejected are already out of service, the airline said. ch-aviation data shows Spirit’s fleet currently comprises sixty-two A320-200s, ninety-one A320-200s, twenty-nine A321-200s, and thirty-two A321-200NXs. Of this total, only 149 are currently active.

“As a key component of the chapter 11 process, Spirit has identified cost savings to be achieved through a significant reduction in its fleet by eliminating aircraft and other related equipment that currently are not, or soon will not be, used to generate revenue in Spirit’s businesses. This reduction and rationalisation of Spirit’s fleet will create a surplus of aircraft and other related equipment,” the company said.

Fred Cromer, the company's chief financial officer, added that the carrier "is committed to redesigning its network to focus its flying on key markets to provide more destinations, frequencies and enhanced connectivity in certain of its focus cities, while simultaneously reducing its presence in certain other cities. To do so, Spirit must right-size its fleet to match capacity with profitable demand."

Spirit Airlines' previous Chapter 11 process, which began in late 2024 and ended in March 2025, did not include the renegotiation of aircraft lease terms. Instead, the LCC focused on other cost-saving measures, which ultimately proved not to be enough to put the low-cost carrier in a secure financial position.

In its initial Chapter 11 filing, early in the year, Spirit Airlines did not renegotiate the terms of its fleet, focusing on other cost-saving measures. This ultimately proved not to be enough to put the low-cost carrier in a secure financial position.
