UK's Jet2 wet/damp-leases A330s under a three-year deal

Jet2 (United Kingdom) (LS, Leeds/Bradford) has signed a three-year contract with AirTanker (9L, Brize Norton) covering two A330-200s, which will be wet-leased for the Summer 2023 season and then damp-leased to the leisure-focused low-cost carrier.

G-VYGL (msn 1555) began operating on behalf of Jet2 out of its Manchester International base on April 6, 2023, although it was subsequently parked on April 10 and replaced by G-VYGM (msn 1601) starting April 13. The A330 is used to operate services to Tenerife Sur and Alicante.

AirTanker said both A330s would begin simultaneous operations for Jet2 from early May 2023 through early November 2023. The ch-aviation schedules module shows they will then be used to fly to Lanzarote (from May 4, 2023) and Palma de Mallorca (May 3) in addition to Alicante and Tenerife.

"One aircraft will remain with Jet2 through the winter season, operating under a damp lease agreement covering both aircraft which will run until November 2025," AirTanker said.

The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that Jet2 does not operate any in-house widebody aircraft - its fleet comprises three A321-200s, one A321-200NX, seven B737-300s, eighty-four B737-800s, and eight B757-200s. While it supplements its fleet with a number of wet-leased aircraft, until now, they have also been all narrowbodies (currently two B737-800s from Air Explore, one from Smartwings (Czechia), two A321-200s from Titan Airways, and one from Hi Fly).

AirTanker operates four A330-200s. The other two aircraft will remain deployed on the airline's charter business, which comprises regular operations on behalf of the Royal Air Force and scheduled, semi-civilian charter flights to Mount Pleasant in the Falkland Islands/Islas Malvinas, operated by AirTanker under a government contract since 2013.

Boliviana de Aviación takes first A330-200

BoA - Boliviana de Aviación (OB, La Paz El Alto) has taken delivery of its first A330-200 even as an acute currency crunch in the country had threatened to jeopardise the much-needed widebody fleet renewal.

CP-3209 (msn 1561) was ferried from Châteauroux to Santa Cruz Viru Viru on April 25-26, 2023. The 8.7-year-old aircraft is owned by Commonwealth Bank of Australia and was formerly operated by Virgin Australia International/Virgin Australia. It is the youngest aircraft in BoA's fleet and the only one less than 13 years of age.

The airline did not reveal a timeline for the induction of the A330 into service. The aircraft seats up to 275 passengers, including 20 in business class.

The delivery took place amidst a shortage of hard currency in the country which forced the government to curb the outflow of US Dollars from Bolivia and thus made it difficult for the airline to pay the lessor. The delayed delivery prompted a Member of Parliament, Marcelo Pedrazas, from the main opposition party Comunidad Ciudadana to request a written explanation to the Minister of Public Works, Edgar Montaño.

BoA's current widebody fleet comprises four B767-300ERs, of which only two are currently active. The four Boeing widebodies are 28.3 years old on average. The airline also wet-leases an A330-200 from Wamos Air (EB, Madrid Barajas) to operate its route to Madrid Barajas, on which the in-house A330 is poised to debut.

Last year, BoA chose to dry-lease three A330-200s to replace the B767-300(ER)s. However, the delivery for the remaining two remains unclear, as Montaño only spoke about one unit during the recent press conference. BoA did not respond to ch-aviation's request for comment.

1st flight for 1st ITA Airways Airbus A330neo

A happy moment for ITA Airways on 27 April 2023 as its first Airbus A330neo took to the skies for the very first time. The aircraft, A330-900 F-WWYO (2035) conducted a 3:45 hour testflight from Toulouse. Delivery is expected in June and the aircraft will become EI-HJN.

The aircraft is the first of seventeen A330-900s the airline has acquired. Ten of these have been ordered directly with Airbus, the remaining seven are leased from AerCap (two) and Air Lease Corporation (five). ITA Airways will use the new A330s to replace its current fleet of eight A330-200s. The first destinations it will fly it to from Rome-Fiumicino will be Delhi, Miami (FL), New York-JFK (NY), and São Paulo.

Next to the A330s, ITA Airways growing fleet consists of four A220-300s, eighteen A319s, 27 A320s, five A320neos, and six A350-900s.

Uzbekistan Airways welcomes 1st A330

On 21 April 2023, Uzbeskistan Airways welcomed its first Airbus A330. The aircraft, wet-leased from Heston Airlines, is A330-200 LY-TKL (1045) and was welcomed at Tashkent on 21 April 2023. A second A330 from Heston is due to follow shortly.

The aircraft is wearing a basic Uzbekistan-livery and the airline will use the type from Tashkent to Dubai, Istanbul and Jeddah. The first commercial flight was conducted on 23 April 2023 to Istanbul.

Uzbekistan Airways will lease the duo for 2023 and 2024 to cope with the return of demand post-pandemic. It joins a fleet of eleven A320s, three A320neos, five A321neos, two Boeing B757-200s, six B767-300ERs, and seven B787-8s. The company also operates one VIP B767-300ER, one VIP B787-8, and two B767-300ERBCFs.

Canada's Lynx Air to wet-lease A320ceo

Lynx Air (Y9, Calgary) has signed a wet-lease contract with the US's GLOBALX (G6, Miami International) for three months starting in June 2023 covering a single A320-200.

The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that GLOBALX operates A320ceo Family aircraft exclusively - currently, six A320-200s and three A321-200s. It intends to add an A319-100 and also operates a single A321-200(P2F) freighter. The carrier focuses on the charter market but also operates as a wet-lessor.

In turn, the Canadian ultra-low-cost carrier operates six B737-8s. It plans to grow its fleet to ten B737 MAX by the end of 2023, as recently outlined by Chief Executive Officer and President Merren McArthur in an interview with ch-aviation, and then to forty-six aircraft in the next four to five years.
