Turkmenistan Airlines takes first A330-200(P2F)

Turkmenistan Airlines (T5, Ashgabat) took delivery of the first of two A330-200(P2F) ordered directly from Airbus in 2021, with the second due "in the near future".

9H-AJN (msn 810) was ferried from Lourdes/Tarbes via Turkmenbashi to Ashgabat on March 15-17, 2023, Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows. The 16.3-year-old aircraft, formerly operated in passenger configuration by Air China, was ferried under Airbus's 'AIB' code and still sporting a Maltese registration. It will become EZ-F429 once inducted onto the Turkmen register.

The state-owned carrier's second A330-200 is sistership 9H-AJQ (msn 816), which is currently undergoing P2F conversion at Dresden.

Turkmenistan Airlines currently operates four B737-700s, one B737-700(BBJ), eight B737-800s, four inactive B757-200s, four B777-200(LR)s, one Challenger 870, and three Il-76TDs.

Bulgaria Air selects Airbus A220

Bloomberg is reporting that Bulgaria Air has selected the Airbus A220 to renew its fleet with. In total, the airline has signed leases for an initial three A220-300s, which are scheduled to be delivered this year in June, August and September. The airline is planning to utilize its new aircraft from Sofia to Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London-Heathrow, and Paris-Charles de Gaulle.

Bulgaria Air is currently operating a fleet of two A319s, five A320s and four Embraer ERJ190s. Of this fleet, the two A319s as well as the ERJ190s are scheduled to have left the fleet before the end of 2025 when their leases expire.

According to the airline's CEO speaking to Bloomberg, the airline has the ambition and wish to standardize the fleet on the Airbus A220 and doesn't rule-out additional aircraft later on.

Air Mauritius eyes A321neo, grows fleet with A330-200s

Air Mauritius (MK, Mauritius) is considering the acquisition of an A321-200N to serve Rodrigues Island once the airstrip on the island has been sufficiently extended and once the airline grows its fleet with the expected arrival next month of two A330-200s on a three-year lease from Carlyle Aviation Partners for use on medium-haul destinations, including a new twice-weekly service to Delhi International in India from May 3.

The A330s will also be deployed on existing routes to St. Denis de la Réunion and to Antananarivo, Madagascar, Mauritius' Defi Media reported. The widebodies would allow Air Mauritius to offer more frequencies and help it adapt its fleet to market and passenger needs.

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, the aircraft are the 254-seater VP-CPJ (msn 751) and VP-CPQ (msn 807) previously flown by Fiji Airways (FJ, Nadi). Delivery has been delayed since the end of 2022. The airline also has an outstanding order for two A350-900s (registration number unknown), according to ch-aviation fleets advanced data.

The expected arrival of the two new A330s will bring the number of aircraft in the fleet to 11. This includes two A330-900Ns from Air Lease Corporation; four A350-900s (two leased from AerCap, one leased from Tokyo Century, and one-inhouse aircraft); and three owned ATR72-500s.

Air Mauritius' new chief executive, Kresimir Kucko, was not immediately available for more information on the A321neo plans. The aircraft type is classified as suitable for Code 4C category airports as defined by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), requiring runways that are 1,800 metres or longer. The present runway at Rodigues measures 1,287 metres, according to the ch-aviation PRO airports module.

Since its return to service at the end of 2021 after 18 months of voluntary administration to avoid liquidation, Air Mauritius has gradually resumed operations with flights showing satisfactory load factors on most routes, the report said.

AF-KLM secures more aircraft via Air Lease Corporation

On 6 March 2023, Air Lease Corporation announced it has reached an agreement with Air France-KLM for the lease of additional aircraft.

Three new Airbus A350-900s will be placed with Air France. The three jets are coming from ALC's existing order book for the A350 with Airbus and will be delivered in 2024. It's currently unclear if these three jets are on top of the three AF-KLM announced in January 2023.

AF-KLM has also signed leases for nine A321neos, which will be delivered between 2023 and 2026 to KLM and Transavia. These aircraft are on top of the already ordered 100 A320/A321neos for KLM and Transavia.

Transavia will become the first airline to take delivery of the new aircraft and is planning to have seven A320/A321neos in the fleet by the summer season of 2024.

Latvia's airBaltic to wet-lease four A320s in Summer 2023

airBaltic (BT, Riga) has announced it will wet-lease four A320-200s from Avion Express Malta (X8, Malta International) to support its summertime operations out of its Baltic bases.

The Latvian carrier will base two aircraft out of Riga from March 26 to October 28, 2023, and one each out of Tallinn Lennart Meri and Vilnius from May 1 to October 28, 2023. The airline said the portfolio of wet-leased aircraft will include 9H-AMI (msn 3409), 9H-AMK (msn 3562), 9H-MLY (msn 3943, yet to be inducted and currently registered as OE-IFJ), and 9H-MLX (msn 2964). Each of them is configured in a single-class layout, seating up to 180 passengers.

airBaltic's in-house fleet comprises exclusively A220-300s, of which it operates 39. The aircraft are in two configurations, seating up to 145 and 148 passengers, respectively. According to ch-aviation research, the carrier has been particularly affected by the Pratt & Whitney GTF PW1100G engine issue with 13 of the jets either out of service either parked or undergoing maintenance.

"Although the challenges, caused by the pandemic and the war in Ukraine are still being felt, the aviation industry is gradually stabilising. As a result, passenger demand for air travel is increasing. At the same time, the industry as a whole continues to face technical parts supply chain issues, which means we need additional capacity to carry all passengers, avoiding flight cancellations," Chief Executive Martin Gauss said.

The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that Avion Express Malta's fleet currently comprises twenty-five A320-200s and three A321-200s. Its Lithuanian sister company Avion Express (X9, Vilnius) operates a further ten A320-200s.
