China Eastern To Order 777s, Delay Airbus Deal




China Eastern Airlines is set to place a USD$6 billion order for up to 20 Boeing 777 jets, while simultaneously delaying a recent Airbus deal, people familiar with the matter said.
The order for wide-body 777s follows a fierce but discreet contest between Boeing and Airbus and allows the US plane maker to bounce back after China's third-largest airline cancelled an order for 24 of its latest 787 Dreamliners last year.
Besides handing the 777 order to Boeing, China Eastern is stalling on the completion of a USD$3 billion order for 15 Airbus A330s announced last October, two of the people said.
Boeing, Airbus and China Eastern declined to comment.
The deals took shape at different times and for different plane types, but together they highlight the stakes involved as plane makers court the world's fastest-growing aviation market under the shadow of a recent trade dispute between China and Europe.
China and more than 20 nations oppose EU plans to force airlines to adopt a carbon emissions-capping scheme that they say will hit foreign long-haul carriers and infringe sovereignty. Airbus has said some plane sales could be threatened.
The EU says its Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is needed to meet climate targets and fill a void left by years of international inaction over airline emissions.
Boeing and Airbus are betting on new Chinese wealth and government infrastructure spending to bolster travel in the country, where domestic passenger traffic is growing rapidly.
Chinese domestic air traffic is expected to grow by an average of 7.5 percent per year until 2030, about three times the rate in North America, and by around 7 percent on inter-continental routes to and from China, according to Boeing.
In September, Boeing boosted its demand forecast for China by 25 percent, predicting that it would need 5,000 commercial aircraft worth USD$600 billion over the next 20 years.
China earlier this month reported its weakest quarterly economic growth in nearly three years, but Western aircraft manufacturers believe the 8.1 percent first-quarter expansion will continue to suck in regular imports of foreign jets.
787 CANCELLATION
The first 787 cancellation by a Chinese airline was widely seen as a setback for Boeing, but the US company has also been riding high on record orders last year for the 777, which dominates the market for aircraft with just under 400 seats.
Boeing said last month it was confident of selling China more 777s and was in advanced talks with an unnamed airline.
China Eastern is the third-largest mainland carrier by market value and second largest by domestic traffic, according to IATA. Its board is expected to meet on Friday.
The company and its subsidiary Shanghai Airlines currently operate a mixed fleet of Airbus and Boeing short-haul jets and over 40 mainly Airbus long-haul aircraft.
The airline said in October it would place an order for 15 Airbus A330 aircraft subject to Chinese government approval, but analysis of the Airbus order book suggests the necessary backing has not yet happened.
China Eastern said in October it would return five long-range A340s to Airbus at the same time as placing an order for 15 smaller A330s. Airbus has stopped producing the four-engined A340, which was heavily outsold by Boeing's twin-engine 777.
The second-hand A340s, which are less fuel-efficient than twin-engine jets and expensive to convert, may be broken up and sold for parts if Airbus cannot find a buyer, market experts said.

Incident: Delta A333 at Amsterdam on Apr 18th 2012, runway incursion

A Delta Airlines Airbus A330-300, registration N815NW performing flight DL-234 from Detroit,MI (USA) to Amsterdam (Netherlands), had landed on Amsterdam's runway 18R (Polderbaan), vacated the runway via turnoff V3 and taxied along taxiway V being cleared to continued taxi via taxiway Z to holding point Z2. Another aircraft was on final approach to runway 18C when the A333 followed taxiway Z and was handed off to ground. The crew received instruction to continue taxi via taxiway Z and A to gate E17 reading back (holding point) Z2 to gate E17. Radar data suggest the aircraft turned off taxiway Z via taxiway W11, crossed the hold short line without clearance to cross the runway and crossed runway 18C prompting ground control to call out "Expedite your cross please!" and vacated the runway at W10 without clearance to cross. The aircraft subsequently continued their taxi without further incident.

The Dutch Safety Board (DSB) opened a short investigation stating that no risk of a collision existed although an aircraft was on approach to runway 18C stating that the A333 did cross the most southern part of the active runway 18C.


Incident: THY A343 at Istanbul on Apr 18th 2012, cracked windshield

A THY Turkish Airlines Airbus A340-300, registration TC-JDJ performing flight TK-7 from Istanbul Ataturk (Turkey) to Washington Dulles,DC (USA), was climbing out of Istanbul when a windshield developed a crack prompting the crew to return to Istanbul. The aircraft landed safely on Istanbul Ataturk Airport's runway 17L about 60 minutes after departure.

A replacement Airbus A330-300 registration TC-JNM departed about 4 hours past schedule and reached Washington with a delay of 3 hours

Incident: ANZ A320 at Christchurch on Apr 19th 2012, rejected takeoff twice

An Air New Zealand Airbus A320-200, registration ZK-OJS performing flight NZ-526 from Christchurch to Auckland (New Zealand) with 170 people on board, rejected takeoff from Christchurch at low speed due to an indication and returned to the apron. A short time later the aircraft attempted another takeoff but again had to reject takeoff at low speed and returned to the apron again.

Following examinations and a test run the aircraft was finally able to depart and reached Auckland with a delay of 4.5 hours.

The airline confirmed takeoff was rejected twice due to an indication problem. Maintenance performed a test run, the aircraft subsequently reached Auckland without further incident.
Incident: Onur A320 at Pori on Apr 20th 2012, could not retract gear due to hydraulic problems

An Onur Air Airbus A320-200, registration TC-OBE performing flight 8Q-5130 from Pori (Finland) to Antalya (Turkey), could not fully retract the landing gear after departure from Pori. The crew levelled off at FL100 and diverted to Helsinki's Vantaa Airport (Finland) for a safe landing about one hour later. The aircraft stopped disabled on the runway and was towed to the apron.

Emergency services reported two of the three hydraulic systems were malfunctioning causing the problem.

The aircraft is still on the ground 8 hours later.

The flight was postponed several times and is currently estimated to depart Helsinki at 02:30L (00:30Z) Apr 21st.

Accident: Virgin Atlantic A333 near London on Apr 16th 2012, cargo fire indication

A Virgin Atlantic Airbus A330-300, registration G-VSXY performing flight VS-27 from London Gatwick,EN (UK) to Orlando,FL (USA) with 299 passengers and 13 crew, was climbing out of London Gatwick's runway 08R about 75nm westsouthwest of London Gatwick Airport when the crew declared emergency, levelled off at FL220 reporting a cargo fire indication and returned to Gatwick. The aircraft landed safely on Gatwick's runway 08R about 35 minutes after departure, stopped about halfway down the runway and was evacuated, a number of tyres deflated. Responding emergency services found no trace of fire or smoke. A number of passengers received minor injuries in the evacuation.

The airline reported a technical problem prompted the captain to return to Gatwick and to evacuate the aircraft.

The airport was closed for about 2 hours as result of the occurrence until the aircraft was towed off the runway.

Incident: Aerosvit A320 near Simferopol on Apr 17th 2012, unruly passenger

An Aerosvit Airbus A320-200, registration UR-DAI performing flight VV-276 from Dubai (United Arab Emirates) to Kiev Borispol (Ukraine), was enroute at FL340 about 125nm east of Simferopol (Ukraine), when the crew decided to divert to Simferopol after a drunk male passenger roamed around the cabin, pestered other passengers, refused to return to his seat despite instructions by cabin crew and subsequently struck a flight attendant. The unruly passenger was subdued and restrained, the aircraft landed safely about 25 minutes later, the unruly passenger was taken into custody by police.

The aircraft reached Kiev with a delay of 2 hours.

The airline reported the passenger was already drunk when he came aboard, he later began to roam around the cabin, clung to other passengers and refused instructions by cabin crew until he struck a flight attendant. The unruly was subdued by cabin crew with assistance of other passengers and taken into custody by police after landing.

Incident: Aer Lingus A332 at Madrid on Apr 16th 2012, flaps problem

An Aer Lingus Airbus A330-200, registration EI-LAX performing flight EI-6962 from Madrid,SP (Spain) to Washington Dulles,DC (USA) with 264 passengers, was climbing out of Madrid's runway 36L when the crew reported problems with the flaps, stopped the climb at 12,000 feet and returned to Madrid's runway 33L about 20 minutes after departure.

A passenger reported the aircraft returned to Madrid after the crew detected a problem with the flaps.

The flight was cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto an additional flight the following day.

The airline confirmed the aircraft returned to Madrid due to a technical issue. The flight was subsequently cancelled, the passengers were reaccommodated on an additional flight the following day

Emirates A380 April/May 2012 Operation Changes as of 11APR12

As per 11APR12 GDS timetable and inventory display, Emirates further postpones planned A380 service resumptions on selected destinations. Meanwhile, additional destinations served by Emirates A380 aircraft will be replaced by 777-300ER on selected dates in April 2012.

Garuda Indonesia orders 11 more A330s

 
Aircraft are key element in fleet modernisation programme

Garuda Indonesia, the national carrier of Indonesia, has placed a firm order with Airbus for 11 more A330-300 widebody aircraft. The contract was signed today in Jakarta by Emirsyah Satar, President & CEO, Garuda Indonesia and Tom Williams, Executive Vice President, Programmes, Airbus, in the presence of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and visiting British Prime Minister David Cameron.
The order is the third to be placed by Garuda Indonesia for the A330 since July 2010, with the carrier now having a total of 21 aircraft on firm order for future delivery. All the aircraft will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines.
Garuda Indonesia has chosen the latest extended range 235 tonne maximum take-off weight variant of the A330-300. The carrier will operate the aircraft with a premium two class layout on services from its hubs in Jakarta and Denpasar (Bali) to destinations in Asia, the Middle East and the Pacific.
“The A330 has proven to be a key element in the success of the revitalised Garuda Indonesia,” said Emirsyah Satar, President & CEO, Garuda Indonesia. “The low seat mile cost and high passenger appeal make the aircraft a perfect fit for our fleet and a firm favourite with our passengers.”

The twin engine A330 is one of the most widely used widebody aircraft in service today. Airbus has recorded nearly 1,200 orders for the various versions of the aircraft and more than 800 aircraft are flying with some 90 operators worldwide. In addition to passenger and freighter aircraft, the A330 is also available in VIP and military transport / tanker variants.
Garuda Indonesia currently operates 14 A330 aircraft, comprising eight A330-200s and six A330-300s.

Airbus starts final assembly of first A350 XWB

 
A350 XWB next generation aircraft takes shape

Final assembly of the first A350 XWB is now underway at the brand new final assembly line in Toulouse. This latest step in the A350 XWB’s progress is achieved as Airbus starts joining the 19.7 metre long centre fuselage with the 21 metre long front fuselage.

This first A350 XWB airframe will be used for the static structural tests that all new aircraft undergo as part of their certification process. The assembly of the first flying A350 XWB, MSN1, will start during summer.

The centre fuselage was delivered to Toulouse on Wednesday 4th April 2012 by Beluga from Airbus in St Nazaire, France. The front fuselage was previously delivered from St Nazaire to the A350 XWB final assembly line on the 23rd December 2011. Delivery and installation of the aft fuselage from Hamburg, Germany will take place in the coming weeks, followed by the wings delivered from Airbus’ wing assembly site in Broughton, UK.

The A350 XWB fuselage is made up of three main sections - front, centre and aft. These will be joined together at the first main assembly station, Station 50. The nose landing-gear is also joined here. Once this stage is completed, the fuselage is transferred to Station 40 where the wings and tail sections are joined. In parallel to this, cabin installation will be carried out simultaneously to the wing-fuselage join up, as well as the “power on” of the aircraft systems. In this way, functional tests can start earlier than on previous programmes.

The A350 XWB is Airbus’ all new family of mid-size widebody airliners. These highly efficient aircraft bring together the latest in aerodynamics, design and advanced technologies to provide up to 25 percent better fuel efficiency and operating costs compared to current aircraft in the same size category. Over 70 percent of the A350 XWB’s weight-efficient airframe is made from advanced materials combining composites (53 percent), titanium and advanced aluminium alloys. The aircraft’s innovative all-new Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) fuselage results in lower fuel burn as well as easier maintenance. The A350 XWB benefits from Airbus’ high level of expertise in incorporating composite material into its aircraft.

The A350 XWB Family consists of three passenger versions with true long-range capability of flying up to 8,500nm/15,580km. In a typical three-class configuration, the A350-800 will offer 270 seats while the A350-900 and the A350-1000 will offer 314 and 350 seats respectively.

Incident: Jetblue A320 at Orlando on Mar 30th 2012, suspected blown tyre

A Jetblue Airbus A320-200, registration N636JB flight B6-667 from Buffalo,NY to Orlando,FL (USA) with 152 people on board, was on approach to Orlando when the crew reported they suspected the left main gear inboard tyre had deflated. The crew continued the approach for a safe landing on runway 18L, vacated the runway and stopped. Emergency services reported all tyres were still inflated, the aircraft taxied to the gate.

Incident: Batavia A320 at Pekanbaru on Mar 30th 2012, flaps problem

A Batavia Airbus A320-200, flight Y6-565 from Jakarta to Pekanbaru (Indonesia) with 163 people on board, aborted the approach to Pekanbaru due to flaps problems. After working the checklists the crew decided to land with partial flaps in sunny weather and near calm winds. The aircraft touched down safely at a higher than normal speed at 15:45L (08:45Z) and stopped just before the runway end (runway length 7050 feet/2220 meters). The aircraft remained disabled on the runway, passengers disembarked onto the runway.

The airport was closed for about 2 hours until the aircraft was towed to the apron, a number of arriving flights diverted.

A number of passengers claimed the crew had announced they had brake problems, there had been sparks prior to landing, there was smoke in the cabin, the aircraft overran the runway and they were kept on board for about an hour after landing before disembarking.

Other passengers reported the aircraft had gone around and continued to fly for about 30 minutes before the aircraft landed. Following touchdown the aircraft came to a stop, then began to move again before stopping again. The crew announced they had problems with the brakes so that they could not taxi to the apron. After about 15 minutes they disembarked onto the runway.

The airline reported there had been a problem with the wings before landing, however stated the aircraft stopped 15 meters/50 feet short of the runway end, there were no sparks and no smoke.

The airport reported the aircraft was towed to the apron, at least one tyre had deflated. The airport was closed for about 2 hours.

Incident: US Airways A319 at Burbank on Apr 1st 2012, rejected takeoff

A US Airways Airbus A319-100, registration N836AW performing flight US-271 from Burbank,CA to Phoenix,AZ (USA) with 67 passengers and 5 crew, was cleared for takeoff from Burbank's runway 15. Immediately after the crew spooled the engines up for takeoff the left hand engine (V2524) emitted smoke. The crew reported they had a #1 engine failure as soon as they powered it up and had stopped on the runway wherever they were and requested emergency services to check the aircraft suspecting the smoke might come from the tyres. Emergency services responded and reported the smoke came from the #1 engine. The crew requested to check the left side of the aircraft for damage suspecting they may have temporarily exited the runway. Emergency services reported there was no visible damage to the aircraft, left landing gear and runway, but the engine was still emitting smoke. Emergency services suggested to tow the aircraft off the runway, the captain offered to taxi the aircraft to the aircraft holding area AA at taxiway A, emergency services agreed, the aircraft vacated the runway via taxiway A2, turned left onto the holding and bypass area and shut the aircraft down. The passengers disembarked onto the holding area and were bussed to the terminal.

The runway was closed for about 30 minutes until the aircraft had taxied off the runway and airport operations had conducted a runway inspection reporting the runway clear.

The airline reported the #3 engine surged 175 minutes into the flight prompting the crew to shut the engine down.

The aircraft landed safely in Phoenix about 2.5 hours after departure.

A replacement Airbus A319-100 registration N827AW reached Washington with a delay of 5:20 hours.
Incident: Aerolineas Argentinas A343 at Buenos Aires on Mar 22nd 2012, could not retract landing gear

An Aerolineas Argentinas Airbus A340-300, registration LV-CSD performing flight AR-1376 from Buenos Aires Ezeiza,BA (Argentina) to Caracas (Venezuela), was in the initial climb out of Ezeiza's runway 17 when the crew selected the gear up but the gear did not retract. The crew stopped the climb at 8000 feet and returned to Ezeiza Airport for a safe landing about one hour after departure.

A replacement Airbus A340-300 registration LV-BMT reached Caracas with a delay of 4 hours.

Maintenance determined the landing gear control unit had failed.

The aircraft climbed to 4000 feet and joined a left downwind for runway 26L reporting they now had all greens and landed safely on runway 26L about 12 minutes after aborting the first approach

Incident: Cathay A343 at Johannesburg on Mar 27th 2012, bird strike

A Cathay Pacific Airbus A340-300, registration B-HXB performing flight CX-748 from Johannesburg (South Africa) to Hong Kong (China), was in the initial climb out of runway 03L when the #1 engine (cfm56, outboard left hand) ingested a bird causing substantial damage to fan blades and the engine cowling. The crew stopped the climb at 8000 feet, dumped fuel and returned to Johannesburg for a safe landing about 65 minutes after departure.

The airline reported the flight needed to be postponed to the following day (Mar 28th).

The #1 engine needs to be replaced.

Incident: Jetblue A320 near Amarillo on Mar 27th 2012, captain incapacitated by panic attack

A Jetblue Airbus A320-200, registration N796JB performing flight B6-191 from New York JFK,NY to Las Vegas,NV (USA), was enroute at FL340 about 55nm north of Amarillo,TX (USA) when the captain suffered a panic attack and behaved entirely incoherent forcing the first officer to seek assistance by cabin crew and passengers to overpower the captain, lock him out of the cockpit and have him restrained in the passenger cabin. Another Jetblue pilot flying as passenger assisted the first officer while diverting to Amarillo for a safe landing about 20 minutes later.

The airline confirmed the flight diverted because of a medical condition with the captain. Another captain travelling as passenger on the flight joined the first officer in the cockpit for the landing and assumed duties as a captain after landing. The ill captain was taken to a local hospital. A replacement aircraft is going to be dispatched to Amarillo to continue the flight.

A replacement Airbus A320-200 registration N624JB reached Las Vegas with a delay of 6.5 hours.

Passengers reported the captain had visited the bathroom and when returning to the cockpit basically went nuts and screamed about terrorists and bombs on the aircraft knocking the cockpit door. The first officer locked him out of the cockpit and had him overpowered. It took six people to sit on the captain to restrain him. Another pilot on board went to the cockpit to assist the first officer for the diversion.

On Mar 28th Federal Authorities filed charges against the captain for interfering with flight crew. A court affidavit claims the captain told the first officer they were not going to Las Vegas and started ranting, then left the cockpit and began shouting about a bomb.

The airline reported on Mar 28th the captain has been suspended. He is still in hospital care.
Incident: Air China A320 near Hangzhou on Mar 28th 2012, hydraulic failure

An Air China Airbus A320-200, flight CA-1952 from Beijing to Wenzhou (China), was enroute near Hangzhou about 140nm north of Wenzhou when the crew decided to divert to Hangzhou due to a hydraulic failure. While on approach to Hangzhou the crew received an unsafe gear indication prompting the airport to prepare a large emergency response. Working the checklists the crew was able to resolve the unsafe gear indication and get all gear down and locked. The aircraft landed safely.

A replacement aircraft reached Wenzhou with a delay of 3.5 hours

The aircraft continued to St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Airport for a safe landing on runway 28L.
Incident: TAM A319 at Goiania on Mar 31st 2012, rejected takeoff

A TAM Linhas Aereas Airbus A319-100, registration PT-MZC performing flight JJ-3590 from Goiania,GO to Brasilia,DF (Brazil), rejected takeoff from runway 14 at high speed after the right hand engine (V2524) ingested a large bird. The aircraft slowed safely and taxied to the apron.

The flight needed to be cancelled. The engine received damage to several fan blades and further downstream and is going to be replaced.

The crew of an earlier departing aircraft had reported vultures sitting on the runway
